Great Conversations and New Connections at SMD in Huntsville

Last week, Janelle and I had the opportunity to attend SMD in Huntsville, and it was a great reminder of just how valuable these events can be.

For us, one of the best parts was simply reconnecting with people we have known and worked with over the years. Huntsville has an unusually tight-knit aerospace, defense, engineering, and manufacturing community, and events like SMD bring a lot of those relationships together in one place. It was great to see old friends, catch up on what they are working on, and hear how their organizations and programs have evolved.

Just as valuable were the new conversations.

We met people from across the defense and manufacturing ecosystem who were working through real engineering and production challenges. Some conversations involved additive manufacturing and prototyping. Others touched on tooling, replacement components, difficult-to-source parts, manufacturing methods, materials, and how to get from an idea or requirement to something that can actually be built.

Those are the discussions we enjoy most.

A large part of what we do at Jaeger Technology Group is helping people solve problems that do not always have an obvious off-the-shelf answer. Sometimes the solution is 3D printing. Sometimes it is scanning and reverse engineering an existing component. Sometimes it means combining additive manufacturing with machining, casting, fabrication, or another conventional process.

And sometimes the most useful thing we can do is sit down with someone, listen to the problem, and help determine what manufacturing approach actually makes sense.

SMD gave us plenty of opportunities to do exactly that.

It was also encouraging to see how much interest there continues to be in practical manufacturing capability. There is a lot of discussion today about advanced manufacturing, supply-chain resilience, rapid development, and bringing more production capability back to the United States. Behind all of those larger issues are individual engineers, program managers, manufacturers, and small businesses trying to solve very specific problems.

Being able to contribute to those conversations is one of the reasons we enjoy working in this industry.

Janelle and I left the event with new contacts, new ideas, several interesting problems to think about, and a renewed appreciation for the people who make the Huntsville defense and technology community what it is.

To everyone who stopped to talk with us, whether we have known you for years or met you for the first time last week, thank you. We enjoyed the conversations and look forward to continuing them.

And if one of those conversations started with, “We have this strange part we need to make…” those tend to be some of our favorites.

Have a Manufacturing Problem We Can Help Solve?

If you have a difficult part, an obsolete component, a prototype that needs to become a physical product, or a manufacturing challenge where the obvious solution is not working, send it our way.

Jaeger Technology Group works with companies throughout Huntsville and North Alabama on 3D printing, 3D scanning, reverse engineering, prototyping, tooling, low-volume manufacturing, and custom manufacturing solutions.

Even if you are not sure what process you need, that is fine. Send us a drawing, CAD file, photograph, sample part, or simply tell us what problem you are trying to solve. We can help determine the best path forward.

Contact Jaeger Technology Group today to discuss your project.
